Do I Need a Travel Adapter?

A travel plug adapter is a simple device that changes the shape of your plug to fit into an outlet in another country. It does not change the electrical voltage. The world uses over 15 different types of electrical outlets, designated by letters A through O.

Our tool compares the plug types common in your home country with those used at your destination to determine if your devices will physically plug into the wall.

Adapters vs. Voltage Converters

It's crucial to understand the difference between an adapter and a voltage converter:

  • Adapters: Only change the pin configuration so your plug fits the wall socket.
  • Voltage Converters: Change the electrical voltage (e.g., stepping down 220V to 110V) to prevent devices from frying.

Check Your Devices for "Dual Voltage"

Before buying a heavy and expensive voltage converter, check the label on your electronics. Most modern travel gadgets (laptops, phone chargers, camera batteries) are dual voltage. Look for fine print on the power brick that says something like: INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60Hz.

If your device says 100-240V, you do not need a voltage converter—only a simple plug adapter. However, appliances that generate heat or use motors (hair dryers, curling irons, blenders) are rarely dual voltage and often require a step-down transformer if traveling between 110V and 220V regions.
