Understanding Visa Requirements
Visa requirements determine whether you need pre-approval to enter a foreign country, how long you can stay, and what activities you are permitted to do while there. It is crucial to verify your visa status before booking any travel, as boarding may be denied if you don't hold the correct entry authorization.
Types of Entry Authorizations
- Visa-Free: You can travel to the destination with just your valid passport. Upon arrival, an immigration officer will grant you entry for a specified number of days (e.g., 30, 90, or 180 days).
- Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA / ESTA / ETIAS): A pre-screening system for visa-exempt travelers. It is generally quick to obtain online but is mandatory before boarding your flight.
- e-Visa: An electronic visa applied for and issued online prior to travel. You'll typically receive a document to print and present at the border.
- Visa Required (Sticker/Consular Visa): A traditional visa applied for at an embassy or consulate, which is affixed to a page in your passport.
Important Considerations for Digital Nomads
Standard tourist visas and visa-free entries generally do not permit local employment. If you intend to work for local companies, you will need a work visa. Digital nomads working remotely for foreign clients or employers should check if their destination offers a specific Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) to ensure full legal compliance, particularly for longer stays.
